Coffee grounds will repel slugs, even our big ol' hungry Pacific Northwest banana slugs.  I did a scientific test a few years ago!  Slugs will not cross a barrier of coffee grounds - but it has to be a pretty thick layer.  Something about the alkaloids in coffee being toxic.

(Unfortunately you do have to keep reapplying the grounds as they get mixed into the soil with watering.)

Nice, I didn't know that! Too bad my parents didn't know that when we lived in a house with really bad slug issues. We had them as big as baby snakes, and they would freak us out in the middle of the night. It seems like a lot of bugs don't like coffee grounds--we should all just use them to make our yards less buggy and more smelly-good. :)
