A stinky carpet can ruin a room. Every time you take a step, some unpleasant odor wafts up from your feet, blanketing the room in stench and unpleasantness. If you are keen to avoid harmful chemicals in your cleaning products, getting that smell out may seem like an insurmountable challenge. Not so, however. All you need is something you probably already have – baking soda.
Baking soda is the king of clean. I use it for many things around the house. In fact, between baking soda and vinegar, we find we don’t need any of those commercial, chemical-laden cleaners. It provides great scrubbing power, and has been used for years for its odor absorbing properties. So when it comes to cleaning a stinky carpet, it just makes sense to give baking soda a try.
Have you ever used one of those powdered carpet cleaners from the store? In addition to stinky fake fragrances, they more than likely also contained a sizeable amount of baking soda. You use straight baking soda in just the same way – simply shake it out all over the carpet like you would one of those cans.
After you have evenly distributed baking soda on your carpet, you can gently sweep it in with a broom to help it adhere to the odors and stains in your carpet. Let it sit for a few minutes to half an hour, and then vacuum the whole works up. Your carpet should look and smell considerably better.
For really sticky stinks, you may need to reapply one or two times, but baking soda is a miracle cleaner and in most cases, 1-2 applications should be enough to restore your room to that clean, odor-free place it should be.
